Protecting Relationships

Large stores say that consumers should have the freedom to shop when they like. That might sound big-hearted, but what we often forget is that my freedom to shop takes away the freedom of someone else who has to work. And it's not just the shopworkers - police, security, banking, distribution, transport, health and catering staff all have to work when shops are open.

I might only want to hit the shops for an hour or two, but these workers are already spending six hours away from their family and friends. It's not much use giving them a different day off in the week either when their kids are at school and their friends are at work.

We believe that children need to spend time with their parents for healthy social and moral development, and adults need time to develop the relationships with partners, family and friends that give them support and well-being. That's why we believe it's vitally important that we all get shared time off.

What's more, do I really need to go shopping on a Sunday? Of course there are always times when I'll need to pick up a few supplies, which is why there are no restrictions on opening hours for small convenience stores. But perhaps there are better things to do with our day off. Make the most of Sundays and go have some fun with your family and friends!
