KSS welcomes Usdaw's response to ACS poll
14-Apr-2010
KSS is pleased to see that the shopworkers union Usdaw has welcomed the findings of a recent opinion poll conducted by GfK/NOP for the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS).
Usdaw's press release can be found here. In it Usdaw notes that 1,000 adults were questioned on their views on the current Sunday trading laws for the ACS poll and the findings show that: 76% of the public support the existing laws.Only 5% favoured liberalisation of Sunday trading laws.89% are opposed to any relaxation of these laws.85% oppose any change to Sunday trading hours for Boxing Day if Boxing Day falls on a Sunday as it will do this year.
Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett said: “These findings show that the public don’t want shops to open longer on a Sunday. Usdaw has always campaigned against any extension to the current Sunday opening hours and this opinion poll shows that the general public agrees with us.
We hope that all parties recognise there is no appetite amongst the shopping public or shopworkers for an extension to Sunday opening hours.
This poll shows that the majority of the public support Usdaw members in wanting Sunday to be a day for family and relaxation.”
