The 1994 Sunday Trading Act allows shops to be open for six hours on a Sunday. A private members Bill being introduced into the House of Lords is asking to amend the 1994 Sunday Trading Act, by changing opening hours for garden centres from six to eight hours. The Bill also seeks to allow trading on Easter Sunday.

A recent opinion poll by GfK NOP revealed that 88% of people did not notice, did not realise, or were not bothered at all by big shops being closed al day on Easter Sunday.

Like most garden centres across Britain, Russells Garden Centre in Birdham, West Sussex had for years been open for business 7 days a week. For the last seven months however, the staff at Russells have enjoyed Sunday without the pressure of work. What led owners Lesley and Richard Phillips to make the surprising decision to close on Sundays?

Most mainland European countries maintain fairly strict rules preventing shops from regularly opening on Sundays. We have heard from German supporters that the City of Berlin is looking to relax these rules this Christmas period, a move which some churches have decided to challenge in court.

On 25 October the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham raised a question in the House of Lords about the health implications of people working more than a 48 hour week. He then followed this with a direct question about the benefits of a shared weekend day off for families. The Bishop is a strong advocate for family life and for Keep Sunday Special.
